A selection of players from the Philippine national men’s football team will face South Korean third-tier club Icheon Citizens in a benefit game Saturday at the Rizal Memorial Football Coliseum.
The Azkals United, led by mainstays Chieffy Caligdong, Ian Araneta, Misagh Bahadoran, Rob Gier, and Angel Guirado, kick off at 7 p.m. in a match whose proceeds will go to victims of tropical storm “Sendong,” which affected thousands of families in southern Philippines.
Eduard Sacapaño, Paolo Pascual, Roel Gener, Nestor Margarse, Raymark Fernandez, Carli de Murga, Bervic Italia, Anton Albor, Ruben Doctora, Marvin Angeles, Marwin Angeles, and Jerry Barbaso complete the cast for the Philippine side.
Charlie Williams, one of the organizers of the match, said in an earlier interview that the match would be a chancefor the large South Korean community in the Philippines to help those affected by the tropical storm.
“It’s an opportunity for Koreans living in the Philippines to join and support the cause and the sport, which is growing by leaps and bounds,” Williams said.
The Icheon Citizens is one of the teams in the Challengers League, the top amateur league in South Korea. Williams said that the team is composed of top rookies and seasoned professional players.
It will be the second charity match played by a selection composed of Azkals players this month. On January 7, a Philippine selection dropped a 3-0 result to CF Internacional de Madrid.
